Gunsmoke Marathon & Memorial Day Shows

Now playing on the MPIR History Capsule is a great line up of old time radio shows for your Memorial Day listening pleasure. Historical, educational drama plays from history, with period music interludes.

The mystery stream is playing a marathon run of the series Gunsmoke!

Gunsmoke is one of those long-running classic Old-Time Radio shows that everyone knows and remembers. It's also one that is still respected for its high values, in all aspects. Gunsmoke first aired on the CBS network on April 26, 1952, billed as the first adult western. It was set in Dodge City, Kansas in the 1870's. The main character, Matt Dillon, was played by William Conrad. Other regular characters were Chester Proudfoot, played by Parley Baer; Kitty, played by Georgia Ellis; and Doc Adams, played by Howard McNear.

The series featured top-notch acting and well-developed scripts that set it apart from many other shows, not only Westerns; however, it was the sound effects that stood out the most. Listen carefully and one can hear many levels of sound that really helps transport the listener back to the old west.

Starting the playlists of episodes, will be two hours of a five hour audio documentary that aired in the 70's, the story of Gunsmoke.

Ray Milland & Dana Andrews Radio Works

Hello MPIR Fans, Now playing on the mystery stream is the radio works of two of my favorite actors. Ray Milland and Dana Andrews.

Ray Milland (3 January 1907 – 10 March 1986) was a Welsh actor and director. His screen career ran from 1929 to 1985, and he is best remembered for his Academy Award–winning portrayal of an alcoholic writer in The Lost Weekend (1945), a sophisticated leading man opposite a corrupt John Wayne in Reap the Wild Wind (1942), the murder-plotting husband in Dial M for Murder (1954), and as Oliver Barrett III in Love Story (1970).

In between his movie assignments Ray Milland performed in several radio series. Included in this playlists is the Lux Radio Theatre production of Reap The Wild Wind, and the Screen Guild Theatre production of The Lost Weekend.

Dana Andrews (January 1, 1909 – December 17, 1992) was an American film actor. He was one of Hollywood's major stars of the 1940s, and continued acting, though generally in less prestigious roles, into the 1980s. One of his best-known roles, and the one for which he received the most praise, was as war veteran Fred Derry in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946).

From 1952 to 1954, Andrews starred in the radio series I Was a Communist for the FBI about the experiences of Matt Cvetic, an FBI informer who infiltrated the Communist Party.
