Fighting Duel On Radio

All the streams are updated with some outstanding old time radio shows for your listening enjoyment. The MPIR History Capsule is featuring episodes of Behind The Mike, Cavalcade America, Can You Imagine That, GI Jive, We Came This Way, and Soldiers Of The Press.

The mystery stream is featuring a fighting duel between The Shadow and The Whistler, with interference from pretenders The Avenger and The Whisperer.

I like just about all old time radio, however there's some series in my opinion that are so bad! That you have to like them for just that. The Whisperer is one of those series.

The Whisperer was an American old-time radio program which broadcast 13 episodes on late Sunday afternoons [5:00 p.m. Eastern] as a summer replacement from July 8 to September 30, 1951 on NBC.

Lawyer Philip Gault (Carleton G. Young), due to an unexplained accident, lost his voice and can only speak in an eerie whisper. Gault infiltrates "the syndicate" in his native Central City to bring down organized crime from within; to the underworld, he becomes known as the Whisperer. Later, his voice is restored through surgery, but he continues to lead a double life as the Whisperer, relaying instructions from the syndicate bosses in New York (who don't know he's a mole) to their lackeys in Central City, whom Gault is actually setting up.

The Avenger, considered a somewhat inferior version of "The Shadow", this show was written by Walter Gibson (Maxwell Grant) and starred James Monks as Jim Brandon, and James LoCurto (who, along with Frank Readick voiced "The Shadow" before the advent of Orson Welles and Lamont Cranston).

Gunsmoke Marathon & Memorial Day Shows

Now playing on the MPIR History Capsule is a great line up of old time radio shows for your Memorial Day listening pleasure. Historical, educational drama plays from history, with period music interludes.

The mystery stream is playing a marathon run of the series Gunsmoke!

Gunsmoke is one of those long-running classic Old-Time Radio shows that everyone knows and remembers. It's also one that is still respected for its high values, in all aspects. Gunsmoke first aired on the CBS network on April 26, 1952, billed as the first adult western. It was set in Dodge City, Kansas in the 1870's. The main character, Matt Dillon, was played by William Conrad. Other regular characters were Chester Proudfoot, played by Parley Baer; Kitty, played by Georgia Ellis; and Doc Adams, played by Howard McNear.

The series featured top-notch acting and well-developed scripts that set it apart from many other shows, not only Westerns; however, it was the sound effects that stood out the most. Listen carefully and one can hear many levels of sound that really helps transport the listener back to the old west.

Starting the playlists of episodes, will be two hours of a five hour audio documentary that aired in the 70's, the story of Gunsmoke.
